Are Weighted Sleep Sacks Going To Make My Baby Sleep Through The Night?

Maybe a bit of a controversial topic here, but today I’m chatting about weighted sleep sacks and if they really do make a difference with your baby’s sleep.

Weighted sleep sacks are a new craze. It almost seems like weighted ANYTHING is a new craze. One thing that can be really helpful is with adults or children who have ADHD or anxiety. They like having a heavy blanket on them, as it provides a soothing and calming feeling.

I have worked in the dental field for a long time and occasionally when I put the lead vest on some patients before taking X-rays, they’d say “I could keep this thing on for my entire appointment!” The weight was so comforting for them and it can feel really calming.

For a baby however, if your baby is experiencing lots of sleep problems like waking up all through the night, they take a long time to fall asleep, or they seem irritable through the night as they wiggle around their crib, a weighted sleep sack is NOT going to solve your problems.

A weighted sleep sack could be a great addition to some sleep training, or instilling some healthy sleep habits, but it is not be-all-end-all. This is not your magic gold. You don’t just spend $100 on a weighted sleep sack and then everything’s fixed.

It can be a wonderful thing to use.

I tried it with my daughter, Georgia, who is now 7 months old and I thought it was really awesome.

She naturally slept well, but I had started healthy sleep habits with her from very very early on. She was sleeping through the night by 6 months old - which can be very common for babies who have been introduced to healthy sleep habits.

I can tell you for certain, that this weighted sleep sack did not help her sleep through the night. It helped her stay cozy, and I liked knowing that she was warm enough in her crib, and that she was comfortable. It didn’t stop her from moving around in her crib, and it also didn’t help her sleep through the night. I have also had better fabric in sleep sacks that I far prefer over the weighted sleep sack.

I am here to tell you, that weighted sleep sacks are not going to solve your problem.

What IS going to solve your problem is consistency, having routines, practicing your sleep skills all of the time with your baby, and having a program for your baby (through a consultant or a program). Heck, even reading a baby sleep book would help way more at getting your baby to sleep through the night.

Products don’t solve problems, they simply help.
